Title: AI for identification to monitor & protect marine environments Description: This surreal image depicts a fragile ecosystem blooming atop an iceberg of plastic waste. Polar bears are surrounded by huge tropical flowers, hinting at climate disruption. Multiple climates are present (arctic and tropical), while beneath the surface, there are discarded human materials, plastics, trash and metals. I was inspired by a recent project at the University of Gothenburg, where AI is being used to monitor the marine environment through large-scale image and video analysis. This technology could help detect changes, identify pollution, and protect marine life more efficiently and affordably. Artwork was done for AIG+FORGOOD "Canvas for the Future" 2025 The artwork reflects a paradox: while nature adapts in surreal, unnatural ways, technology—when used wisely—could help us reconnect, restore balance, and create a more sustainable, interdependent future. AI is not just a mirror of our imagination, it becomes a tool to care for the environment to protect what’s left and regenerate what’s been lost. There is hope that animals and plants can be better protected when marine life can be monitored more efficiently with AI.
